As a dog owner and pet sitter I am always looking for ways to make our lives easier around here! I have put together a list of some of our dog hacks and how you can use them in your own home. All of them have been tried and tested with help from my adorable doggy sidekicks.
#1. Coconut Oil With Parsley
Bad breath happens but there is a way to combat that with coconut oil and parsley! Coconut oil kills bacteria while parsley makes breath fresh. We have found the easiest way to feed coconut oil is by freezing it. Simply heat up the coconut oil, add chopped parsley and pour into the mold. The pups go crazy for it! You can purchase the mold we use here: https://amzn.to/2CAygMM
#2. Benadryl for Allergies
I can't tell you how many times Benadryl has saved the day around here. From a bee sting to allergic reaction this over the counter med is safe to use on dogs and is effective. It can even help keep your dog calmer during long road trips and help them sleep in stressful situations. Be sure to check with your vet for the proper dosage for your dogs!
#3. Clicker Rewards
Training is fun and oftentimes is done in public settings. By using clicker training you can praise your dog for their actions without having to use verbal commands. Instead of using "yes" and people staring at me like a crazy lady, I can instead mark the behavior with a clicker. Our dogs personally love this method and it is a fun and easy way to train. Super affordable too: https://amzn.to/2CzvZ4t
#4. Vaseline on Paw Pads
Living in Minnesota we get some pretty harsh climate changes. It can take a toll on dogs paw pads and an easy fix for that is Vaseline! It will help keep them from cracking and protect them from the elements. There are so many amazing paw products out there but don't doubt the power of good ol' Vaseline.
#5. Keeping Busy With Frozen Kongs
Winter boredom happens and we keep busy by freezing kong treats. You can fill them with just about anything and the doggos go crazy for them! Find them here: https://amzn.to/2BERiA8
#6. Wash Dog Dishes In The Tub
Every so often it's time to clean those doggy dishes. Since we have so many we fill our tub with dish soap, hot water and let the bowls soak for a bit. Wipe them clean and you are all set!
#7. Make a Kennel Cover
If you have a crate that stays up but drives you nuts looking at it- create a kennel cover! This doubles as a side table and is an awesome way to hide that wire crate. If you're local and need one of these my husband can hook you up! ;-)
#8. Muffin Tin Feeding
This is great for the fast eater or the one who needs some extra brain games. Fill your dogs kibble into a muffin tin and watch them have a ball!
#9. Doggy First Aid Kit
Keep a doggy first aid kit in your most used car at all times. They sell these or you can even get crafty and make your own! Luckily we haven't had to use it on the dogs but it has come in handy multiple times for people when we're out and about. I found one here: https://amzn.to/2QR61m6
#10. Baby Gates
We always think to baby proof our homes but forget to puppy proof. I love having a baby gate on hand and we've use it more times than I can count. When guests arrive you can gate off the pups or if you are doing construction you can keep them safe! We have a few permanent ones in certain areas but one of these really comes in handy: https://amzn.to/2Lzh6SS
Did any of these make you say "why didn't I think of that?" I hope they are helpful for you and your pups and if you like it please share it! :)
